Keep the Bike Lanes Clear

Some folks in Albuquerque need a friendly reminder…

Bike lanes are for bicycles only.

Do not park in, idle in, or otherwise obstruct the flow of bike lanes. It’s just like parking your car in the middle of a street and expecting the flow of other cars to change around you: dangerous for everyone. Bike lanes allow both cyclists and motorists to predict the behaviors of one another and remain safe. We all depend on the bike lanes to keep cyclists and motorists separate so that we can easily move along. Obstructing the bike lane results in unpredictable stops and maneuvers, and disrupts the flow of traffic in a way that is particularly dangerous for the cyclist.

I understand what these individuals are thinking: “There were no bikes in the lane when I stopped. I didn’t know a bike was coming.” That’s exactly the point. That’s exactly why you do not park in, idle in, or otherwise obstruct the flow of the bike lane. You never know.

Keep Albuquerque roads safe for everyone. Keep the bike lanes clear.
