A Wind Jacket is a Must

Wind jackets are fantastic for commuting. They are incredibly light-weight (under 6 oz) and incredibly compact, making it super easy to tuck one away inside your pack or panniers. When worn, these jackets provide solid wind protection and are water-resistant (they are generally coated with a DWR). They won’t keep you dry in a sustained driving rain, but in a light sprinkle or even a quick shower these jackets do the trick.

Something important to know is that wind jackets don’t breathe very well; if they did, they wouldn’t be windproof. This means during exercise and activity – like biking – you may feel a damp sensation along the inside of the jacket. This is your body’s perspiration condensing along the material that it’s struggling to pass through. However, most jackets will have pit zips that allow for decent ventilation.

A fun bike commuter fact about pit zips: you can use them for ventilation even when wearing a backpack. Most cycling-specific jackets have a horizontal flap along the back for ventilation. Trouble is, the flap doesn’t work so well if it has a backpack covering it.

I own the REI Swift Jacket. It’s rated to be windproof in conditions as high as 60 mph. The fastest I’ve gone on my bike is 35 mph and the Swift Jacket did a great job keeping the chilly, fast-moving morning air off my body. It has a longer tail in the back (great when I’m hunkered over the handle bars), elastic cuffs that fit snuggly at the wrist, and wide-opening pit zips under the sleeves.

A couple other great options to look at are the Marmot Ion and the Salomon Fast Wing. They have the same basic design as the Swift except that both the Ion and the Fast Wing also have hoods that roll away into the collar and they both stuff into a chest pocket for compact storage. From just trying on these two products, they both seem to be as windproof as the Swift.

Curious to know how windproof a jacket is? Here’s a little test you can do:

  1. Put your hand inside the jacket, flat against the material.
  2. Put you mouth directly against the same area of material.
  3. Blow as hard as you can “through” the material, against your hand.
How much of your breath could you feel moving against your hand? (Be sure not to confuse the heat of your breath with air moving through.) The more breath you feel, the less windproof the jacket is.

I know what some of you are thinking: "It’s summer in Albuquerque, 90 degree days with cloudless skies and blazing sun. Why are we talking about jackets?"

The fact is most of us commute in the morning when the air is still chilly from the cool desert nights; it may be 90 at lunch time, but temperatures still bottom out around 50 at night. What’s more, there have been plenty of afternoon showers and blustery winds recently. Not to mention that monsoon season is still in our future.

With this in mind, packing wind and rain protection for under 6 oz and around $50 is a fantastic idea for all of us who commute.

Slime Your Tube

While cranking up hill on the way home the other night, I hear the sudden sputtering, spitting sigh of my rear tube deflating.

Upon inspection, I find a giant ¼” piece of glass driven straight through the double rubber of my tire. I needed a pair of needle nose pliers to pull it out. My tube never stood a chance.

Such are the hazards of commuting.

But fear not, the tube was easily replaced and I’m ready to roll once again. Well, almost. It’s time to Slime my tube.

Slime is a fantastic substance that prevents minor punctures from disrupting your roll. It’s just like a synthetic scab. If something – like a goathead – creates a small puncture in your tube (smaller than 1/8”), the air pressure and rotation of your tire pushes the Slime into the opening, where it clots and plugs the hole. Not only can you keep rolling to your immediate destination, but you can just keep on rolling with the same tube until you run into a major reason to replace it.

Like a giant ¼” piece of glass driven straight through your tire.

Slime didn’t help me in this particular instance because the glass remained embedded in the tube; the puncturing object has to be removed for the Slime to do its thing. I also suspect the hole would have just been too big for the Slime to clot effectively.

Getting slime into your tube is easy. You don’t need to remove your wheel, take off the tire or anything like that. The first step is simply to unscrew the cap on the stem and deflate your tube. Then, using the special top on the Slime bottle, remove the valve core from your tube’s stem. When it comes time to squirt the Slime, make sure you have the stem in the 3 or 9 o’clock position; this allows the Slime to get into the tube and run down the side without making a huge green mess. Replace the valve core and inflate the tube. Finally, free-spin the wheel so that the Slime spreads out and coats the entire tube for optimum protection. Also, if you don’t spin the wheel, it will feel totally off-center during your first ride because the newly-injected Slime will have pooled in one place.

One other note: the Slime web site says that Slime is environmentally friendly. I’m still waiting back for a more in-depth explanation from the company on this one and will update this entry when I have it.

The bottom line is that Slime is great for the commuter because of the junk and debris you can run into on the road. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to keep the littlest of things from deflating your good times.
